>From what I understand, nearly everything is in the planning stages,
as the "official" kick-off for IYNF (International Year of Natural
Fibre) will not be until January 22, 2009 at the FAOUN (Food &
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) meeting in Rome. I've
also heard that most of the industry emphasis will be on cellulosic
fibers (cotton, jute, flax), as they are the most common commercially
produced natural fibers. Additionally, some in the wood composites
industry are attempting to include fibers made with the lyocell
process (rayon, Tencel, bamboo, etc.) as "natural fibers."

At this point, my guild (Spindles & Flyers in the SF Bay Area) has
already has already hosted very well-attended lecture by Linda
Cortwright (editor of Wild Fibers), and will be offering the usual
full slate of workshops, classes, and lectures on different aspects of
work with natural fibers, including an advanced charka-spinning class
in February, and a workshop by Judith MacKenzie McCuin on fleece
selection in March.
