This is an educational, interesting, albeit humorous discussion to read. The first image that came to my mind when I first read about betel juice and lime was not the fruit but people throwing lime into a mass grave a la scene in the movie Amadeus in order to speed decomposition.
Nevertheless, googling betel nuts produced the article from the Taiwan News, for which someone else supplied the link, where way down in the article about efforts to find other ways for people to use betel nuts besides as a narcotic, using them for dye was mentioned - the article, however, didn't detail how to do this. Taiwanese are researching this, and I'm sure they'd be delighted to share the information if you, the original requestor, contact them.
