Facilitating access to free online resources: challenges and opportunities for the library community A white paper from Taylor & Francis May 2013 http://www.tandf.co.uk/libsite/pdf/TF-whitepaper-free-resources.pdf Introduction The volume of freely available online resources continues to grow exponentially.Potentially, many ofthese resources could be of enormousvalue for teaching, learningand research purposes. However, finding, evaluating and facilitating access to thiscontent brings with it many challenges, for both librarians and their user communities.Taylor&Francis have conducted a research programme to help explore the issuesrelating to free contentdiscoverabilityfrom the perspective of librarians. We wanted tounderstand what role librarians see free content having within their institutions; itsrelative importance compared to paid-for resources;and the challenges associated withmaking better use ofthis material. This paper presents the results of this research programme. We hope that by exposingsome of the challenges we can stimulate discussion on this important topic andhelpmake it easier for institutions to enrich their paid- for collections withhigh-quality freecontent. “This survey is a good starting conversation.” - Subject Librarian, (USA) commenting on the T&F Survey: Facilitating Access to Free Online Resources, distributed April 2013 STEPHEN B.
