The Forum allowed major stakeholders to present their perspectives on impending federal policy changes regarding open access to scientific research. The event included speakers from * scientific society publishers, * commercial publishers, * university libraries, * university researchers, * open access advocates, * companies involved in big data, and * government agencies. Slides, videos, news article Slide presentations (in pdf format) and videos from the conference are available from this site. A news article about the Forum can be found under the Article link above. Background The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has directed federal agencies "to develop plans to make the published results of federally funded research freely available to the public within one year of publication... Such results include peer-reviewed publications and digital data." These agencies are required to submit draft plans by August 22, 2013. Funding agency responses could dramatically change how scientific information is exchanged and archived, as well as how scientific research is performed in the US. We feel strongly that university faculty should be aware of the preliminary proposals being developed by the funding agencies and their potential impacts on the University research community. https://lib.stanford.edu/scipubforum2013?utm_content=wible%40stanford.edu&utm_source=VerticalResponse&utm_medium=Email&utm_term=Forum%20on%20the%20Future%20of%20Scientific%20Publishing&utm_campaign=Data%20Management%20Services%20%40%20Stanford%3A%20Follow-up%20on%20Science%20Publishing%20Forumcontent#middle-tab-3 Future of Scientific Publishing: Open Access to Manuscripts & Big Data Stanford University June 27, 2013 8:30 Welcome (video link) Introduction to Forum (video link) Robert Byer, Professor of Applied Physics, Stanford University Michael Turner, President, APS 10 min 8:40 TODAY’S DATA, TOMORROW’S DISCOVERIES: Expanding Access to the Results of Research Funded by the National Science Foundation (slides not available) Myron Gutman, Assistant Director, NSF Amy Friedlander, Staff Associate, NSF 30 min 9:10 The Changing Landscape of Scholarly Publishing (slides not available) (video link) Elizabeth Nolan, Chief Publishing Officer, OSA 30 min 9:40 Open Access, the American Physical Society, and CHORUS (pdf) (video link) Joseph Serene, Treasurer/Publisher, APS 30 min 10:10 Coffee Break 30 min 10:40 Open Access to Manuscripts and Big Data -- Progress and the Elsevier Perspective in 2013 (pdf) (video link) Dan Morgan, Director of Universal Access, Elsevier 30 min 11:10 Open Science Perspective (pdf) (video link) Michael Eisen, Co-founder, PLOS 30 min 11:40 Panel & Interactive Discussion (video link) Moderator: Thomas Baer Morning speakers Robert Schwarzwalder, Associate University Librarian for the Science and Engineering Libraries, Stanford University Robert Byer, Professor of Applied Physics, Stanford University 45 min 12:30 Lunch 1 hr 1:30 Scientific Computing with Amazon Web Services: Introducing the Executable Paper (part 1, part 2, part 3) (video link) Jamie Kinney, Principal Solutions Architect, Amazon Web Services 30 min 2:00 Open Access to Data: Policy Mandate and Scientific Imperative (pdf) (video link) Victoria Stodden, Assistant Professor of Statistics, Columbia University 30 min 2:30 Libraries and Research Data Curation: Barriers and Incentives for Preservation, Sharing, and Reuse (pdf) (video link) Stephen Abrams, Associate Director of the University of California Curation Center (UC3), California Digital Library 15 min 2:45 Closing the Loop: Digital Library Services in the Age of Data and Open Access (pdf) (video link) Tom Cramer, Chief Technology Strategist, Stanford University Libraries 15 min 3:00 Sustainability Science Needs Sustainable Data!
