I know of no universally accepted amount of noise that anyone in the
industry agrees upon when measuring dynamic range. If a body like the ISO
has such a spec, please let me know about it. Virtually every scanner
manufacturer measures dynamic range to suite their own marketing based on
what they feel is acceptable data above some noise level. This is why you'll
see a Heidelberg Color Publishing Solutions scanner made by Umax with a
different dynamic range spec than a Umax scanner that is identical (or a
Polaroid or Agfa scanner which is really a Microtek unit).
