I recently downloaded the Nikon Scan 3.1.3 for OS X, and started using it with the Nikon LS4000. Finally all my apps are OS X native!
However, I noticed immediately that Nikon has totally dropped the ball in the OS X port, the 3.1.3 is drastically slower than the 3.1.2 on OS 9. A single-pass 4000 dpi scan w/ ICE that took 1min 38sec on 3.1.2/OS 9 now took 3min 22sec on 3.1.3/OS X. I'm running this on G4 / 933Mhz / 1GB RAM / 160GB disk / OS X 10.1.4 with no other open apps. For kicks, I tried the same scan with VueScanX 7.5.28 trial version on OS X, and it only took 42 sec to complete! My problem is: I'm used to the workflow and UI of Nikon Scan and get good color matching results with it. 90% of the images I work with are underwater photography on high-saturation slide film (EliteChrome Extra Color & ES 100 VS), and I haven't figured out how to get neutral color results with VueScan yet. Because of the huge speed advantage, I guess I need to spend more time with it to find if I can disable all the "auto-miscorrect" features built into it! ;-) If anybody has advice on optimal settings for neutral results in VueScan or has found a way to make the lame Nikon Scan 3.1.3 run faster, please share your experience.
