Yes. However, there are spaces between the sensor elements, and it's desireable to capture the light that would fall there. In addition, you don't want the capture area of each sensor to have sharp edges--that leads to aliasing on fine patterns. Therefore, a good digicam sensor will have a diffuser over it, so that the capture area of the elements will be essentially overlapping fuzzy blobs instead of sharply defined circles or squares. The function that defines the intensity versus distance-off-center is essentially a finite impulse response filter that is applied to the image. -- Ciao, Paul D.
