Hi all, Here's the latest update on the sale of the company:
http://www.makemusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/MMUS_-Press-Release-for-TO-Extension_54716927-4-c1.docx As for a new version of Finale, there will be a new version this year. We announced a break in the yearly upgrade cycle last summer. The new version has been in active development with an expanded team since a few months after the release of Finale 2012 and full on since the release of Finale SongBook and Finale 2012b. We have not made a release date available publicly at this time. If you intend to upgrade to the upcoming version of Finale and are currently on an older OS X version, I would suggest looking at moving to 10.7 or 10.8 soon. Both are $19.99, and 10.8 is available via the Mac App Store. We will no longer be supporting PPC Macs, 10.5, or 10.6. If you are on one of the initial Intel models that will not support 10.8, 10.7 can still be obtained by contacting Apple. If on Windows, the new version will still support Win XP through Win 8. However, the upcoming version will be the last version to support Win XP or Win Vista and best results will be on a Win 7 or 8 PC. --- Justin Phillips Senior Product Manager MakeMusic, Inc. There were (and still are) rumors that they were reworking the code to update a lot of ancient code that was in the program, but only time will tell us if Finale2014 will be a major change or the sort of incremental upgrade which still contains a lot of long-standing issues that we've come to expect. I haven't heard anything further about the lawsuit that was being brought on behalf of shareholders concerning the alleged underselling of MakeMusic to the private equity firm whose proposal had been accepted by MakeMusic's board of directors (it was referred to in this group sometime over the past 3 to 6 months) so I don't know how that sale is progressing. But the people trying to become the new owners have pledged something like $10million toward the total rewriting of the code so that it will be current and will supposedly take care of a lot of the long-standing issues. But until the ownership actually changes hands that's not a certainty, and the lawsuit seemed to promise that the ownership change might take a very long time. My guess about the release date for Finale2014 is sometime in June or early July, since that was the release window for previous versions of Finale for many years. That way schools can make the upgrades in time for the start of school in September and teachers can get used to the new version. But nobody knows for certain when the release will happen, we just know that it will happen because the company had said it will happen back when they released the news that there wouldn't be a 2013 version. When pressed (gently) for an update on Finale, I did get confirmation that it is being worked on. I remember obliquely asking if the delay was because all the code was being rewritten and getting something like an affirmative answer, but I didn't feel comfortable pushing further. I value my friendship with this guy and would not want to compromise it by pressing for inside dope to which I am not entitled. Besides, it is possible that even he doesn't know details. I know....a lot of help I am! Still, it's an excuse to say hello. I sure am hoping, given the two year cycle, for bug fixes to long-standing issues, and completion of incompletely realized things (like parts with unlink-able hairpins, or better MIDI, especially percussion and tempi). The "fire sale" of 2012 has begun, and this, like the birds returning with the first hints of spring, creates a sense of hopeful anticipation. There is also the academic cycle, with monies for lab upgrades coming available, and those of us who teach Finale wanting to have time to absorb new features. Plus the hope that the release is early enough so that the inevitable 2014b can arrive before classes begin!
