You might have various disk tools from Apple or from third party providers.

If you can get the computer running from a CD, then if that CD is the system
installer, it should have the generic disk tools on it. Run Disk First Aid
and see if it wil recognise the harddisk at all. If so let it do whatever
repairs it is able to.

If it will not recognise the harddisk, and as you have a full back up, you
might use Disk Tools to reformat the disk.

If there are any hints that there are blocks gone bad, then scrap the disk.

I have a number of third party applications as well, that I applied, when a
Jaz medium went sick just a few days ago. One of them told me exactly which
blocks, that had died. The number was large, so I must unwittingly have
dropped it. I gave up un then medium and trashed it.

(If you do not have such tools on the start-up CD, then try to get them on a
floppy and run them from there).

I consider the loss of 1 harddisk, out of several, and one Jaz medium a
cheap fare over 11+ years with Macs.
