Of course, so a little thought is involved in those situations where you want to respond *only* to the person, not the list

I'm not suggesting that there's an excessive degree of work involved, but that the consequences of the oversight of sending a message to everyone are considerably greater than those of the oversight of only sending it to one person.
(Of course others would argue that if you are two-faced enough to be sending stuff that you don't want your "friends" to read, maybe you deserve everything you get - there have been a couple of interesting revelations!)
