Thanks for the suggestions. Actually, I was able to replace the first quarter with two 8ths, then hide the second 8th, and drag the beam over, making the first 8th look like a quarter. Then I did the same thing with the last quarter. Then I was able to drag the beam in the first measure over to the first 8th in the second measure, in order to create the beam across the bar.
