Finally, lute tablature has arrived with Finale 2003, I am glad with what
I've seen and used so far (two lute songs), but I am stuck with many
questions. Anyone out there with more experience or just good ideas?

Here's some immediate things that bug me:

1. Rythm staff above tab numbers or letters
- Rythm above the tab staff has no dots, the dots are placed behind the
notes, so even with making the dots visible (wonderful new staff attributes
dialogue box) and adjusting their positions, I'm stuck with adjusting each
and everyone of them. I won't do that.
- More than one layer gives more than one rythm staff. I can find no way to
combine them into one.
My solution for both problems is creating an invisible staff with visible
notes, single pitch, in which I type the combined rythms manually. Like I
did in Finale 3.0 |-( Any insights where I went wrong?
2. Tab for instruments with more than 6 strings
- An average lute, if there is such a thing, has more strings than tab
lines. So when I create tab for a lute with, say 10, strings, I make just 6
tab lines visible. Open string 7 is no problem. Open string 8 to 10 has nice
new articulations or expression. But how to place them? I make editions with
staff notation and tab notation combined, so typically I enter the notes in
staff, then implode into one staff and change that into tab. I can enter
into the tab staff right away, but the same problems arise: if I attach the
articulation for an open 10th string to the tab 'note' that is placed far
underneath the tab staff, how do I get rid of the original tab 'note
without deleting my articulation? Or if I place it as a note attached
expression, and then hide the notes with staff styles, how do I unhide the
other notes in this layer at this place? I suppose I must make sure I don't
have any other notes in this layer at this place? I like Finale because of
it's musical approach to notation, this is creating sheet music with only
the process of notating in mind, not very intuiitve for a musician. |-(
- Where are my 'ledger lines' for fingered notes on string 8 to 10? I now
draw little smart lines, I suppose I should make an articulation, I'll do
that. But that is what I've been doing since Fin 3.0. |-(
3. No ties in tablature makes sense. But Finale does print the second note,
so I must erase every note at the right end of a tie manually. That seems
plain dumb to me. Where do I go wrong?

Sorry if it sounds complaning, of course I am delighted with what I have
achieved so far and I am sure I will get used to all the workarounds. My
thanks goes out to all of you (Richard) who worked with Coda to make lute
tablature possible. I'll make my list of suggestions known to Coda in time
for the next upgrade.
