It's probably not a major issue; I was just trying to illustrate the outer
limits of unusual things I might conceivably want to do, to give anyone who
advises me an idea of whether Finale would cater well for my needs. I have done
the more unusual things only a few times in a life-time; and I get the
impression that Finale is as good as any program for the kind of things I might
want to do.
I believe custom key signatures are supported, because, when I was trying
out the Finale demo version, I seem to recall a place in the program where you
could literally build up your own key signature as an alternative to choosing
one of the 30 standard keys - so you could (for example) construct a signature
such as F# Bb Db (and so on). Is this so?
I also seem to recall you could have up to 127 sharps or flats, so I
suppose you could have keys like Cxxxx major (C octuple-sharp major), and I
remember being astonished that this was provided for, because I can't imagine
anyone actually wanting to do this. 8 or 9 or 10 sharps or flats I could
imagine, perhaps for brief passages (and I have seen a few bars in 8 flats
(Db minor) in an actual piano score) - but dozens, or over a hundred, sharps or
flats seem quite a different matter. (Unless I was completely misinterpreting
the purpose of this part of the program, and what it was for.)
So are bitonal (or polytonal) key signatures possible? (Just normal keys,
that is, not non-standard signatures.) (I seem to recall someone commenting on
this recently, but I can't seem to find it now; so pardon me if I'm asking
something that's recently been dealt with.)
Regards,
Michael Edwards.
