I ran across a beaming problem that has me stumped. I've used Finale off
and on for some time, but am by no means an expert (and am a newcomer on
this list). I keep thinking the solution is staring me in the face, but so
far I can't see it. Here's the problem:

The beams for a group of four sixteenth notes in Layer Two are partially
obscuring the notehead for an eighth note in Layer One. I thought, well
I'll just nudge the beam(s) up or down a little and that will fix it
(though I'd never encountered the problem before). I got out the Special
Tools palette and found that I could change just about everything but what
I needed to change. I could change the stem lengths, but they were not
then attached to the beam(s). I could move the secondary beam toward or
away from the primary beam. I could squish the beams down to a point. I
could change the angle or flatten them to horizontal. About the only thing
I could not do was find a handle for the beam(s) and nudge it vertically up
or down.

I finally resorted to a very klutzy way to get the score at least to look
right (though it doesn't play back correctly). I added an extra pitch to
one of the sixteenth notes, higher than the actual one, which forced the
beam(s) up and out of the way, and then made the notehead of this note
invisible. Now the music looks OK (but contains that ghost note that holds
the beam up).

Is there no better way?

Thanks in advance,

Bob Clifton
