Daniel and Robert, this may be of some interest: While I initially dismissed the Open Firmware solution to the "turbo fan" problem in OS 9 as a bad idea -- especially since the poster claimed that it shut off the fans entirely -- I did some digging at MacFixit.com and found the original post which suggested the fix. In it, the poster claims that this solution was recommended by an Apple tech (so presumably it would not void your warranty) and that it does not shut the fans off enitrely (which would obviously be extremely bad) but simply prevents them from going into "turbo" mode unnecessarily. I would still recommend checking with Apple before trying this out, as I haven't seen *any* user reports on the reliability of this kludge, nor on potential side effects; there are no instructions on how to reset the machine to its factory state if it turns out the turbo fans are in fact needed; and we have only the poster's word for it that this is an Apple-sanctioned solution. But if the fan noise bothers you, it might be worth giving Apple support a phone call and asking about the reliability of the Open Firmware fix.
