I don't use sound fonts but your posts and others I have seen made me curious, so I went Googling. I found a site which answered many of my questions, "Introduction to Sound Fonts" by Josh Green who is writing a soundfont editor for Linux. The URL is http://www.mstation.org/sound_fonts.html . You may already be beyond the information in this introduction, but I hope it helps.
