And wrong. But now two different people thought I was saying 
otherwise, so let  me  repeat myself: a2 indicates that a pair of 
parts *that are normally separate from each other* are now 
*temporarily* sharing a single line of music. Got it? There were two 
lines of music on the staff, and now there is only one, and the 
instruction "a2" shows  that the players of both the preceding lines 
are to play together on the single line. OK? Understood?

And do, please, note  the "standard" quote reference to BJ Smith, who 
in fact  has  nothing to do  with this exchange. I should think it 
the most obvious  thing in the  world that such misleading 
irrelevancies  should be clipped.
