On Mon, 14 Oct 2002 19:31:11 -0400 Ronald M. Krentzman opined:

The Leblanc company did make one lower clarinet for its founder, Vito
Pascucci, but AFAK, there is just one of these, and it wouldn't be available
for anyone else to use.

It seems as though there was more than on octocontrabass clarinet in Eb;
three in fact. See:
http://www.contrabass.com/pages/octobass.html
Given what a centre for bass clarinet playing Amsterdam is, I shouldn't be
at all surprised if one of these monsters hadn't made it's way up from La
Couture Boussey via Paris. Dennis said he saw a metal instrument so it could
quite possibly have been a Leblanc "paperclip" model albeit on steroids.

And, by the way, I would notate it in bass clef if were to play the part,
but that's my bias as an orchestral player coming through. The difficulty is
not the notation, but the fact that your head vibrates so much playing the
lower notes on contrabass clarinets that it is difficult to focus on the
music!

Rudolf van Berkum
