I'm not sure what you mean by that.  If I enter six quarter notes in a 4/4
bar, choose "Leave measure alone" to the warning, and then use the tuplet
tool to turn them into triplets, it all works just fine.

As Aaron already mentioned, there is no problem at all with this if you're
using Speedy Entry.  If you're in Simple Entry, I don't know.

Another trick you might consider, especially if the triplets are
repetitions of the same pitch, is to enter them as half notes, and then use
the Plug-in -> Note, Beam, & Rest Editing -> Rhythmic Subdivisions to
divide all half notes into 3 equal values.
