I thought about that, but she said she had been able to place the slurs just fine in files created in her current version so I discounted that possibility. I figured if she knew to double-click in one file that she would remember to double-click in the other file.

But that may have been unsafe assumption on my part.

It doesn't sounds like that to me. If the original poster gets a "dotted rectangular box" instead of of a slur, it sounds more like the poster is single-clicking instead of double-clicking before drag in the Smart Shape Tool.
