Hello again, I've now discovered what had happened when I tried to number single measure rests as well as multiple ones. I had set it up correctly, but had forgotten that when I highlight the whole file and break the multi- measure rests the whole file doesn't stay highlighted, only the section where the m-m rests have been broken. Without watching the screen I had then just recreated the m-m rests in the area that remained highlighted, not as I thought in the whole file.
By coincidence, with the beginning of the file showing on screen at 100% the only rests visible were single ones. Further down the page were some single measures in among genuine multiple ones, and they had been recreated with the 1 in place. I also had to tell the system to use symbols for rests less than 2 measures, otherwise it showed a horizontal beam for the single measure rest instead of the standard whole rest. Talk about mistakes all there waiting to be made!
