Listsibs:

I had, at one point, planned to publish scores on the Net4music site,
but for about the past six months, or so, there has been a message that
the self-publishing feature of the site had been postponed. I've not
been by the site for a while, but when I just visited it, I found that
Net4Music's publishing activities have been acquired by the site set up
by Music Sales and Hal Leonard, "Sheet Music Direct". Details are in a
press release on Coda's web site
(<http://www.makemusic.com/uk_30_09_2002_deepening_alliance.html>)

I thought I remembered that there had been some sort of "alliance"
between Hal Leonard and Sibelius, and in running a "Google (R)" search,
I found that my memory was, at least in this instance, correct.

I can't help but wonder if this maybe can be interpreted as a judgment
in the ongoing Coda / Sibelius affray. Since Tab work accounts for a
substantial part of the publishing efforts (on the pop side, anyway) of
Hal Leonard, one wonders whether this agreement influenced the fact that
in the most recent release of Finale, there seemed to be a rather larger
amount of improvements to the TAB capabilities than has previously been
the case.

On another level, I am a bit disappointed about the announcement. One
feature that Net4Music had was the capability of self publishing, and
that seems to have gone by the wayside. There are a couple of "free
music" distributions channels available: the Choral Public Domain
Library is one <www.cpdl.org>, and there is a music side to the Project
Gutenberg website (<www.ibiblio.org/gutenberg/music/>, but are there any
other sites permitting self publishing of music--a "composer's co-op",
as it were?
