It is relatively easy to take a quadruple meter tune with fairly regular rhythmic arrangement of melody and add a beat (e.g., Red River Valley); and even more effective to take a tune in 3 or 6 and omit a beat from every 6 (My Country, 'Tis of Thee, When Johnny Comes Marching Home).
