i received a graphic from a publisher, 900 dpi tif [4253x938 pixel, created on pc, zipped], and opened the graphic [on mac], placed it in a MS word document [title page] and printed to pdf [acrobat 5]. the graphic looks terrible, with jagged edges as if it were of a very low resolution.
i sent the pdf to the publisher to get their opinion on it, thinking maybe it was simply that they only had this poor quality version - they have no eps version of the image -, but it surprised them as well: when they drop the same image into pagemaker and print to pdf, apparently the image is decent.
using "graphic converter", i tried to create an eps from the graphic, but the resulting eps image doesn't appear to be changed in any way [at least as far as the appearance goes] from the original. when i open the original graphic in adobe illustrator, or through other programmes that can open it, the quality seems already to be bad [so it seems not to be caused by word].
where could the apparent reduction in quality have arisen from? perhaps from unzipping with stuffit expander - which produced a Picture Viewer document!? or some other cross-platform glitch?
in word, i have to reduce the image significantly, or it is larger than the entire page [it is, according to information contained in the graphic, 12 x 2.65 cm]! more curious is that the reduction, to maintain the proper proportions is 3% vertical, 13% horizontal [xtr unequal!].
the only possibility so far seems to be for me to send the publisher the word document, and have them reconstruct the 5 pages which use this graphic in pagemaker and for them to send me the pdfs of the title pages... i don't want to leave this task to them, i am _very_ fussy about the exact spacing and placement of text on the pages i prepare, and anyways, i should be able to do this... what are some possible causes for the reduction of resolution?
