Thanks to all who answered this. I figured out how I did it (which was not in the manual). It was with EMEL macros--the precursor to today's plugins. Apparently, Finale then supported data modifications not included in the U.I., and EMEL macros allowed you to do some of them, including individual placement for staff and abbr. staff names.

Indeed. I also kvetched. I'm sorry to report that Fin03 apparently takes a step backwards in this regard. It appears to arbitrarily change the font sizes of text expressions. At any rate, I have a file that Fin03 corrupts this way where Fin02 doesn't.
