I am sure that it must be possible to set it as a default so that, say channel 10 program 1 will play back note bellow staff as bass drum, note on middle line as snare, the notes in between as tom-toms, and the top lines as cymbals, for example. I just do not know how to achieve this marvelous effect. Your help would be much appreciated!

You need to edit the Percussion Maps for this. It is an enormous pain, even now that I know how (more or less) since I have to edit the map for every new file I create with the Setup Wizard. (Does anyone know how to make my Percussion Maps appear automatically when I choose Drums in the Setup Wizard? They are loaded into my Jazz Font Default file properly.)
The subject of percussion maps is very large, too large for me to go into here. You will find the item at the bottom of the Staff Attributes window. You will have to read the documentation on the subject. Just remember to click "Use this note" when you change something, otherwise nothing will happen.
Sorry not to be of more help, but it took me a long time to understand this fiddly little dialogue box. If you have specific questions once you have read the chapter, write back and I will try to help.
