This may be something you've already done, but it bears mentioning.
Have you tried running the Disk Cleanup utility in Windows? Sometimes a bad .tmp file can be the cause of system hangs. Clear your temporary internet files as well (same utility).
After that, defrag your hard drive. Even if the Defrag utility says the hard drive doesn't need it, do it anyway.
