In case you migrate to OS X, the Mail application has a mechanism for junk mail which does a pretty good job. You can train it to move ugly messages to a trash folder and never "see" them. It can utilize the list of folks in your address book so that their posts stay in the INBOX.
In any case, I would suggest everyone start to act on this problem at the legislative level by contacting their federal rep. Given the opportunity to sue the bastards, I think I would.
