If that's the case, I should think the simplest thing is to just run spacing on test measures and note the differences: Enter some notes in a measure, apply spacing, then take a look at the width under Measure Attributes. Then add some element, reapply spacing, and check the width again. You'd have to use some creativity to make sure that you're really adding exactly what you think you're adding, but with a scientific approach you ought to be able to calculate anything you need. Of course this gives you the horizontal size of an element plus its associated spacing (which sounds like what you want anyway). For the character alone, you'll have to subtract out the space.
