Soh, Soh, Soh, Do

These three sohs are in the introduction not the tune :-)

I'll be honest, I'd never even thought of those triplets as part of the tune.  Not one of my kids has ever sung those notes when I've asked them to sing the Star Wars theme, they always start on the Doh.

(I ask them to sing it not to test their aural, oral or singing skills, but to see if they know the tune well enough for it to be of use to them in this context - if it's not so familiar that they can sing it immerdiately without prompting then it's of less use..)  Of course, once it's been used to identify intervals in pieces upon which they are working, then the pieces themselves can be used as examples and eventually, the interval itself is enough and no other reference is needed.

Aural tests as required by the examining boards are a minefield - One test is to clap in time to the music then state the time.  You would not believe how often when examining I've had a candidate clap perfectly then, when asked to state the time have looked at their watch and said "half past eleven"..

One wonders just how much importance some teachers attach to this part of the exam.

All the best,

Lawrence
