I am sorry to disappoint you David,
but if you think about 1:1 digital transfer from DAT to PC,
SoundBlaster is NOT the way to go.

- First, you never know, when it changes the overall loudness of the digital
stream,
because there is no 0dB marking on its mixer sliders (and their max value is
definitely more then you want),
nor has it any means to bypass the mixer.
- Second, it performs automatic SRC (Sample Rate Conversion) on digital
inputs, at ANY sample rate.
It means, every signal goes through its consumer quality (cheap) conversion
to 48kHz,
which changes your precious data bits. (and of course you cannot turn SRC
off.).

So, unless you can afford a pro audio card, consider transferring audio in a
pro studio,
taking home .wav files to work with.

As to audio editing software, my first choice would be Steinberg's WaveLab,
but it is probably too expensive. A good and cheaper one is CoolEdit.

good luck,
Abel Korzeniowski
