Dear Chin-Chin

I'm on a different platform, working with a different language, but it might
of relevance to you anyway.

I work with Japanese texts in Finale2003, in WindowsXP-US. This is not easy.
WinXP-US is capable of creating Japanese characters, language kit installed,
in Word, Outlook, Notepad, etc. But in Finale, it is a problem. I cannot
paste and glue from Word. I must set font and script in all the relevant
dialogue boxes of Finale, type Japanese, and all I get is weird behaviour.
Lyrics and TextTool have slightly different weird behaviour, but in the end
they both give only questions marks on the screen, albeit question marks in
a Japanese font. Interesting. I suppose some of it is Windows related, but
some might be Finale related, so applicable to your situation. The interface
for typing Japanese (the transition from alphabet to Japanese characters
needs an interface in which you can choose which character goes with your
phonetic input) is different in Finale then in say Word. So, Finale has made
some provisions for Japanese, perhaps it conflicts with Windows interface?
But it isn't working, or I am too stupid to make it work (God knows I tried,
though), or XP is not compatible. I don't have the knowledge or patience to
sort it out, it doesn't work for me. Previous versions of Finale had no
provisions for Japanese, nothing worked, now something seems to be working,
but in the end not quite. Next version of Finale perhaps?

My solution is inputting the lyrics and textblocks in a Japanese OS. Finale
does run in Japanese Windows, although that creates other problems (system
fonts are not compattible in Finale, so I am groping in the dark when
choosing from drop down lists for fonts and script, make sure to remember
which place your font and script have in their respective lists). Fonts
between language versions of Windows are not quite the same either, so back
in US-Windows my Japanese texts are suddenly printed in an other Japanese
font, but at least it does show up in Japanese (after some haggling with
update-layout and additional confirmation of fonts and scipts).
It was one of the hardest things I did in Finale, but now I have a beautiful
book of 24 Japanese Song with guitar accompaniment.

Good luck

David
