Umm...it lets you insert things. <g> For example, let's say I've got a 4/4 bar, and I want to put in quarter notes C D E F. But my hands slip and I do C D F. I can put the cursor on the F, go into Insert mode, and stick in the E.
(I know there are easier ways to accomplish this particular task; I meant it only as an example.)
