All of this depends on your working methods. You can place dynamics with metatools, just as you can with articulations. So just as you would select the articulation tool and hold down 1 while clicking to get a staccato dot (at least in my default library -- not sure what Coda's defaults are these days), you can select the expression tool and hold down 4 while clicking to get a forte marking. Take a look in the manual for further distinctions between measure-attached expressions and note-attached expressions.
It is true that dynamic expressions are not auto-placing the way that articulations are, but there are a variety of ways to align things correctly, including the TGTools Align/Move function. There's also a library created by Johannes Gebauer of dynamic marks saved as articulations, which you can get from the Downloads page at www.finaletips.nu. This lets you place dynamics with the articulation tool (which makes them auto-positioning), but keep in mind that then they will only affect the playback dynamic of the single note to which they are attached (as an articulation would). Or you could place them as articulations and then use TGTools Align/Move to also convert them to note-attached expressions.
