This assumes, however, that in the unlikely case of MakeMusic's demise there will also be a concurrent need for software re-registration. In most cases, the failure of MakeMusic or its computer systems will have absolutely no effect on currently-running computers with currently-operable software.

Since MakeMusic seems secure for the immediate future, the concern doesn't concern my current computer. But it replaced a 3-year old computer, and I can expect that in 3 or 4 more years I might be on another new computer. Or I might purchase a notebook computer in the future.

The acquisition of new computers by those working a computer-intensive field such as computer-engraved music, is a fairly common occurance. So it is a fair bet that when/if MakeMusic goes belly up or is bought by somebody (like I can really believe that Microsoft would consider itself bound by any previous commitments to customers when it buys out other companies, or that Apple would consider itself legally bound to continue to support Windows-based customers should it purchase MakeMusic like it purchased Opcode and orphaned an entire customer base) such an event would occur concurrently with some/many Finale users' acquisitions of new computers.

And those people may well be s--t out of luck trying to get Finale to work!

I read with interest Tyler's Q/A post, where Finale2004 will have a maintenance release that will include the ability for us to "transport" the registration code to a different machine -- that is EXACTLY the garbage that Sibelius does, and depending on the required media (Sibelius requires the ever-dependable 3.5" diskette media) it can spell disaster in its own right!
