Actually I am using the expression (F for forte, metatool 4) as it is in your default library, which is set to "beneath staff baseline or entry."
Why on earth are you using the default library anyway?
Because it's a new version and I opened the default file? When I import any of my 2003 libraries I still have to edit each expression anyway since none of them is predefined to be baseline and entry or just baseline or whatever, so all the expressions in a previously defined library act as they always have -- they go where you click.
I thought the whole idea was that we would be able to enter ALL expressions aligned the same. Now I find out that I will have to go through and manually edit EACH and EVERY expression in the new libraries if that is the behavior I want.
Just as you for example have to adjust playback or font values for each expression if those settings don't suit your needs.
And we can't edit individual expression placements.
WRONG! Each expression has an offset from the default positioning.
What I mean is that I can't edit one assignment of F separate from a different assignment of F, so I need to create a duplicate entry if I want different behavior. While this is no change from previous expression behavior, it does seem as if the new "align expressions" capability is only partially a valid claim -- in my simple preliminary test moving the expression by hand resulted in no collision at all with the note stem, so I am not sure what Finale is using as a basis for its decision to offset that particular placement.
So it seems this is another marketing tool of limited usefulness in the real world.
Silly statement IMO. Learn how to use the feature before you complain.
I don't think it's a silly statment -- part of the publicity of this new release was that expressions will be automatically aligned. In a simple test involving only 4 quarter-note beats it's already proven false. So there won't be any long string of metatool entries without having to move some, redefine others, just as always.
I realize I can edit each expression to change the definition, or simply drag those I don't agree with, but then I'm back to the same behavior as in earlier versions, with no way to guarantee alignment of expressions in each assignment.
FWIW, Forza! will soon be able to transfer Fin2004 expressions between files, complete with descriptions and positioning. [I just have to finish a composition this weekend.] Then you just make the changes in one file and directly transfer the expressions to all other files where you want them.
Now THAT will be a godsend!
Thanks!
