Subject: [Fwd: Poll: How often do you upgrade your hard drive?]

There was just a discussion on the Finale list, and I was accused of
being 'kinky' and 'abnormal' (among other things) for upgrading my hard
drives on average every 18 months. They considered that very atypical
behavior, and that a drive was typically 5 years in service.

I've had 22 drives in 10 years on 3 machines; since 5 were replaced that
became defective, that means my regular upgrade was 17 drives in 10
years. Unusual? Normal?

lots of surprising answers snipped

I guess I'm either REALLY lucky, or I'm constantly on the brink of disaster. I've never had a drive last less than 4 years (5 average), and I hardly ever turn off my computer. I only have one machine at a time, starting with an Atari, then Mac 7100, and now a G4. Third machine since 1988, fourth hard drive (only the 7100 got a second one, after 4 years, and that because of capacity. THe original drive lasted 6 years.)

I honestly don't know what to make of the short lives of others, or the LONG lives of mine.
