Exactly! - the correct pronunciation is that which is recognised as correct by the majority. 

If one insists on pronouncing a word differently from the majority, then one is open to being suspected ignorant unless one makes it clear that one is either attempting to change the language or that one has some other specific reason for doing so and not that one simply doesn't know what the "correct" pronunciation is.

When I was a student there was a comedy programme on tv which featured an idiot called Frank Spencer who repeatedly pronounced words incorrectly to get a laugh.  One such word was "harrassed".  His mispronunciation has passed into the language so comprehensively that I now can't remember which is "correct" and which is the joke. 

Acceptance of a mispronunciation into the language has robbed us of a joke and that is surely unforgiveable.
