First I entered the 8th triplet note, then entered a quarter-triplet to the
left of it. Rather than a long-short grouped tuplet, I get a regular
quarter note followed by the beginning of a triplet grouping (and the cursor
shows triplets activated). Second, I entered both pitches as
eighth-triplets, then changed the first pitch to a quarter-triplet and both
change to a regular non-triplet rhythm. Is there a different way to do
this?

If you mean, to define tuplets right, I think it is much more simpel to enter notes and values first and then apply the tuplet definition using metatool, then you just press a letter and click on the first note in the tuplet group and you have the tuplet right (inclusive gracenotes and rests) in one click. Specially with complicated tuplets is this methode much more convenient. Besides you can copy your metatools tuplet definitions using Robert Pattersons Settings Scrapbook.
