But my main problem is what symbol, regardless of font, should I use?
In "Aftertones of Infinity" Schwantner uses an "X" to show that the music that follows is unmetered (the music is "framed in seconds and the rhythm is interpreted proportionately"). Kurt Stone in "Music Notation in the Twentieth Century" (pg. 141) mentions the use of a zero ("0") for unmetered sections.
Also, if anyone is doing a fair amount of extended technique work (graphic notation,
etc.) on Finale, any ideas on useful fonts and such would be great.
