I have no problem entering triplets on the fourth beat, in either speedy or simple entry, although in simple entry when I enter the first 8th-note of the triplet it fills the beat with 2 8th-rests. I turn the second 8th-rest to a note by clicking on it just as I did the first one, but when I then turn off the triplet icon and change the first 8th to a quarter, the extra 8th-rest at the end remains. I can use the eraser tool to click just past the 8th-note that completes my triplet on beat 4 and that erases the extra 8th note.

I wish I could recreate your problem so I could offer better insight to help you with.

With your tuplet definition, I'm not sure what your complaint is, unless it is that on quarter-8th triplets the number always goes above the triplet. That's because the Beam-side command only works when there is a beam. It would be nice if they changed beam-side to be stem-side, added note-head-side, and left the manual-placement for selections in the definition.

Thanks David - I guess Finale sees the triplet instruction already in force
and I was doubling the instruction. But I can't get this to work on the
last beat of a bar. What's the trick for that? The Finale manual really
needs to make this clearer - I've been working with the documentation and
not finding these tips.

Likewise I've got Document Options | Triplets set to have the tuplets always
on the beam side, but they still always come out above the note regardless
of register, and when I drag the number & bracket downward, the bracket
doesn't change directon unless I right-click and tell it manually. That
seems like a double-whammy.

When you change the first note of the second triplet to be the quarter
note, you don't delete it, you simply put the cursor on the 8th note you
entered to define the triplet and hit the 5 key to change it to a
quarter note.

Keystrokes should be:
ctrl-3, 4, 4, cursor left 2 times so it is on the first 8th, 5.

I just tried it and that is how it works in speedy entry.

In Simple entry:

select the 8th note, select the triplet, enter two 8th-notes.
click on triplet icon in simple-entry palette to turn OFF triplet mode.
click on quarter note icon and click on first 8th-note of triplet
already entered. This changes the first 8th to a quarter and completes
the triplet.

Aha! I know what the problem is. It's the quarter-eighth triplet.
When you create the triplet, the FIRST rhythmic value you enter tells
Finale how big the grouping is going to be. So to enter a
quarter-eighth triplet, enter a triplet EIGHTH note first, (to tell
FInale that it is an eighth-note triplet grouping) enter the last
eighth note, then go back and change the first note to a quarter note.

Thanks, I've just tried this two ways without success.

First I entered the 8th triplet note, then entered a quarter-triplet to

the

left of it. Rather than a long-short grouped tuplet, I get a regular
quarter note followed by the beginning of a triplet grouping (and the

cursor

shows triplets activated). Second, I entered both pitches as
eighth-triplets, then changed the first pitch to a quarter-triplet and

both

change to a regular non-triplet rhythm. Is there a different way to do
this?
