Here's an example of the help that I need *in action*.
First this is a rough draft. It is not a final copy.
OK , here is my 2¢The first invisible measure is a 9/8 bar, actually. The first invisible barline occurs between the Cm right hand chord and the first sixteenth-note figure.
Spacing is bad: there is too much room around your invisible barlines (e.g. after the first three notes and many other places)
The funniest thing is that everyone who has suggested this has chosen everywhere in the measures other than where the actual invisible barlines are. And no one has suggested the first step.
.
Slurs are much too close to staccato dots, even touching them at some pointsExample? The clearest example I can see is the C-minor chord here in the right hand with that marking above it. When you zoom in close you will find that the slur is not touching.
However, you're right it might be too close. What do you do in your global settings to avoid this? What's your *numbers*?
Grace notes are too far from main notes, also (IMO) too smallYour preferred ratios?
Very ugly tie at beginning of second system and several other placesAh yes. The giveaway that I hadn't run any tie plug-ins yet. Not a consideration for a first draft. It comes upon solving the tie problem (which a few people have emailed me decent suggestions -- thanks everyone!).
Nothing about the note values or accidentals are wrong except distancing from the note in the case of the accidentals. (The stacking of the accidentals -- i.e. which rules are broken or bent where is also from the autograph, not the edition). Everything is as true as possible to the autograph; if Ives wrote it "wrong" it stays "wrong." There are two spots where the note values do not add up vertically, but they are not wrong because Ives wrote it that way. ..Syncopated half rests in 3rd system are wrong (even if they are that way in the original)
Personal dislike: I hate those accents in Maestro, they are too wideWell since you can bring in another accent from somewhere else and adjust its size, do you have any recommendations as to another font that you use that has worked for you?
Distance between treble and bass staves is too great
This is highly flexible. You only have four systems for the page, Where do you put your gap of white space when you're confronted with this issue? My other choice was to make page 2 the second 5 system staff, but it would be more pleasing if facing pages buddied. So the last two pages got the 5 system staves
So noted. It is not a concern at the moment. This was obviously formatted on an 8.5X11 inch page; most (American) publishers would prefer 9X12 or 10X13.
Third system on page 3: very poor alignment of accidentalsSuggestions? Methods of dealing with it? There are some that could be better but they do reflect Ives's hand.
I could go on, but I've probably been way too negative already
Please do. Please share how you would deal with these things as well.
None of the publishers I work for would accept this, sorry.
