I cannot believe the controversy this little thing has caused on every mailing list to which I belong (from mere curiosity to outright hostility, usually stemming from misreading of the third word)

One of my few other interests in life apart from music is history, particularly the Anglo Saxon period.

"žaes ofereode - žisses swa maeg" is a line from an Anglo Saxon poem and means "That passed away, so may this" .

If you would like to hear it read in Anglo Saxon, an excellent reading of the poem can be found at:

http://www.kami.demon.co.uk/gesithas/readings/deor_oe.html

Click on the large letter at the start of each line to hear the line read by
Steve Pollington.

In particular, listen to the fall at the end of the final line of the poem.

All the best,

Lawrence
