You have to have a program that handles soundfonts, or a soundcard that handles soundfonts. All the CreativeLabs SoundBlaster cards since the Soundblaster AWE have made use of soundfonts.

Currently, the Reality and Surreal software synths (only work on Win98, not on WinXP unfortunately) can make use of soundfonts.

If you are using Win98 you can visit www.seermusic.com and download demos of these softsynths and experiment.

You would open the softsynth, load your soundfont in, and then choose your Midi-In port and start playing on your keyboard.

To hear Finale through the same soundfont you could use a software midi-driver such as midi-yoke (free from www.midiyoke.com) and install that with however many virtual midi ports you want. Then you select MidiYoke-Out 1 in Finale and MidiYoke-In 1 in Reality and all the midi output from Finale would go through Reality, using whichever soundfont you have loaded.

I am sure there are probably other softsynths which make use of soundfonts (do a web-search) but I don't know them.

If I may add my own question to this thread: what software does one need to use soundfounts directly through a midi keyboard on a PC? I.e. to simply play on the keyboard using these soundfonts.

Thanks,

Dennis
