It seems that patchlists containing instrument names don't show up in FinMac 2004. This was a major issue when Digital Performer came out for OS X, but MOTU provided users with patchlists for most MIDI instruments currently on the market. There's also a third party application, Cherry Picker, that allows users to create new patchlists or to edit existing patchlists--customizing patch names, adding banks for user cards, etc.
The MOTU patchlists do not show up in Finale, nor do patchlists edited in Cherry Picker. This must mean that patchlists need to be written specifically for each MIDI application that a user has installed in OS X. I find this to be a major flaw in Apple's CoreMIDI. In earlier versions of Finale the user could select FreeMIDI in his/her MIDI setup, thereby taking advantage of patchlist functionality provided by MOTU. This worked great for me, since I use DP for MIDI sequencing and audio recording, and Finale for printing out charts. But in OS X FreeMIDI (as well as OMS, which in my opinion is no great loss) is now extinct. CoreMIDI is the only game in town, and Apple doesn't appear to be very helpful about assisting developers or users with patchlist issues. Why would they, when they own Logic, a major competitor? Also, I'm very disappointed to find that I still can only use 4 of my 8 MIDI instruments in FinMac 2004. The user is only provided with 4 inputs and 4 outputs in MIDI setup. I only need one input for my keyboard controller. Who uses 4 inputs anyway? But I hate being limited to 4 outputs--I need more than that! And another thing: I wonder why the developers felt the need to change the keyboard shortcuts so drastically, especially in Simple Entry? I'm having to completely relearn keystrokes that I had been using for almost 4 years--annoying!
