Yes, Finale's smart hyphens in Fin2k4 does not put the first hyphen in the new system under the first note, certainly a goof on their part. Here is a relatively simple work-around:
1) Using Type Into Score Click on the first note of the system and enter Option-Space, hyphen, then click outside of the staff.
2) Using Adjust Syllables, select the lower handle and hold down the left arrow until the lower handle is about half the amount you have set for distance between hyphens in Lyrics Options.
After awhile you will know just how many taps of the left arrow it takes.
I know this is what some of us have been doing already without Smart Hyphens, but it's worth a try.
