Dear John,

I have taught Schenkerian Analysis a number of times. In addition, my
wife does research in Popular music in which she uses quasi-Schenkerian
analytic notation. I do all of her examples for her.

The answer is that yes, you can use Finale for Schenker sketches. In
fact, I believe that Music Theory Spectrum (the publication of the society
for Music Theory) also uses Finale. Some things are cumbersome, but I have
done lots of sketches and I even have a student who hands in
Finale-produced sketches using Finale 98!

I'm guessing that there are lots of people on this list who could help
with specific questions.
