Keith:

Are you running any other MIDI-utilizing programs at the same time? If so,
you may want to use a program called MIDI-OX to split your MIDI device's
resources. It will basically take any MIDI IN or MIDI OUT device and split
it into up to 8 "virtual ports." For instance, I currently have my external
keyboard set to have four "separate" outputs- one used by Windows, one used
by Finale, one use by CakeWalk Pro Audio, and one used by Winamp. This
avoids conflicts between devices by allowing the programs to share the
resources while thinking they each have the device to themselves.

In Win98SE, I remember a similar error (though I think mine might have been
MMSYSTEM004) that occurred when two programs tried to use the same MIDI
device; MIDI-OX fixed it.

Please, anyone tell me how to correct an error dialogue box which pops up
randomly.
I have no midi keyboard connected at the moment- (can't afford to update
from my 20 year old Yamaha yet!)
So I'm using all 'qwerty' keyboard and mouse.

I am running Fin 2001 on Windows 98. Plenty of RAM. I have 2004 installed
but am using 2001 for the sake of speed- (mine -not Finales!!) I still can't
get used to all the 'dangly bits' on 2004 yet!

Completely at random - and often (not always) after a spinning eggtimer icon
appears on cursor, a box will appear with a 'whoosh' sound. If the 'spinning
eggtimer' icon DOES appear it can last for 20 or so seconds, everything else
freezes, then-

Default Midi Output Device (in the blue 'title bar)
MMSYSTEM001 Undefined external error. (and an OK button)

Click on OK- everything goes on as normal!

As I say, it isn't a fatal error but really annoying when it happens every
five minutes or so!

Please help!
Cheers Keith in OZ
