Dear Wisdom,

In System 10.3 for Mac, when you save a Finale file as a PDF file, it uses Preview, and the file will open in Preview. Those using System X have no problems receiving and printing the PDF files. The file is quite a bit larger than PDF files I have made in System 9 using Acrobat Distiller. Some of my friends who are on Windows or on Mac System 9 tell me that the newer PDF files have problems, especially font problems. I can't find any way to set up inclusion of fonts in Preview or in the Print Dialog. I have found however, that saving FinMac2k4 files in PS format (not within Finale but in the System X print dialog) and using Distiller running in Classic to create the PDF files works both for Windows users and System 9 users. I was surprised that Distiller would recognize PS files created in System X, butit does.

I have sent my recently completed Finale 2004 tutorial files to a number of people with Windows machines who asked for them. They can open and read the newer PDF files, but the music imbedded using EPS files prints as bitmap. I found that when I convert my new text files for the tutorials to PS, then use Distiller to make the PDF files, they print the music clearly, and the files are smaller. I would be happy to send the improved files to those who are on Windows.

Perhaps things will be better when we get a maintenance update for FinMac2k4 - and I am hoping that we will be able to export EPS files again.
