Not really todays customs, but in the 18th century violinists were expected
to read at least the French G clef, and they almost certainly had to read
soprano clefs as well.

Even Bach's autograph of the Ciaccona switches to French G clef for some
high passages.

I learned transposition at the keyboard by just reading clefs, and that
works surprisingly well. Not that I was ever a great keyboard player.
